What to Wear in New York City?
Your clothing choices in New York City will depend pretty much on the activities you have planned and the weather, of course. Here are some suggestions:
Women – During summer months you will not need anything except shorts, skirts and short-sleeve shirts in cotton, but as temperatures go down, you will also need light slacks and long- sleeve tops and a warm sweater and coat for evenings, especially in November. During winters, it will get cold and wet and slippery, too, so pack warm and waterproof clothing. For going to museums or nightclubs, pack a dress and a coat if it is wintertime. Some restaurants require you to wear cocktail dresses and heels, so pack a pair of them, too!
Men – Summers will not require anything except t-shirts and shorts, but with a slight dip in temperatures, you will need jeans and full-sleeve shirts and lightweight sweaters. If planning to go out clubbing, you might consider a semi-formal shirt and pants along with a tailored sports jacket or a blazer. Wear proper fitting shirts and trousers and avoid baggy jeans and clothes at all costs. Some restaurants require that you wear formal shirts along with khaki pants and blazers, so pack them in case you are dining at such places. For winters, pack woolen sweaters and blazers or leather jackets. Also pack waterproof gear.
Kids – For your kids, you can pack shorts and t-shirts and skirts along with light slacks or leggings. If the temperatures see dips, then pack a light jacket or sweater. The winters here can be quite cold and wet, so pack coats and woolen jackets or you can also go for duffle coats and leather jackets. In case it rains, pack trench coats also.
Footwear – One thing that is absolutely necessary in New York is a comfortable pair of shoes. You can argue that there are subway system and taxis, but you will still find yourself doing a lot of walking around the city. So, make sure you have comfortable shoes. However, avoid flip-flops as they will not protect your feet from all the dust in the streets. Also, do not wear sports or tennis shoes on the road. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes while walking and sightseeing. For going upscale areas or nightclubs, you can pack heels and formal shoes.
Accessories – You will definitely need sunscreen and sunglasses in NYC, and to protect yourself from sun further, you can go for wide-brimmed hats or fedora hats. Avoid baseball hats though, unless you are going to a sports event. You can pack bold or subtle accessories to pair with your outfits. Also keep rain gear such as umbrellas and trench coats.
