October is a great month to visit the sprawling and bustling metropolis of Istanbul as the city gears up for winter. There is a lot happening in the city, and while you are here, there are some things that you just cannot miss. Visiting the aquarium of Florya is one such thing due to its vast diversity of aquatic animals. Then there is the beautiful Suleymaniye mosque with outstanding interior and exteriors. The only thing that you must be precautious about is the way you dress, as this is a Muslim city and you wouldn’t want to hurt the religious sentiments of your host. What to Wear and How to Pack for Istanbul in October?

Even though it is a Muslim-dominated city, it is still quite lenient in terms of its dress rules for men and women. But, it never hurts to be on the safer side. Here are some suggestions:

Women – Very few women wear shorts in Turkey. The only shorts you will spot are the ones that reach up to knees, so you can pack them along with some short-sleeve t-shirts. Besides the weather isn’t shorts-friendly, too, so you will have to go for pants or jeans. You can take full-sleeve blouses along with them or tank-tops which can be worn with loose cotton shirts. Shorts and bikinis are perfect for beaches, though. Evenings get chilly here, so don’t forget a scarf or a pashmina along with a nice jacket. Mosques will require conservative and decent clothes, so do pack one such pair.

Men – If you are a fan of shorts, pack only Bermuda shorts; save the other ones for the beach. You can always go for something full and classy, like cotton or linen pants along with half-sleeve t-shirts or shirts. For the mosques and other religious places, you will need conservative dressing like pants and full-sleeve shirts.  Pack a jacket for evenings.

Kids – Shirts, t-shirts, shorts or jeans would be good for kids. For the cold evenings, you can pack light jackets for them.

Footwear – Make sure you pack comfy shoes like trainers or sneakers. You can go for open-toe shoes, too, like sandals or gladiators. Flip-flops are meant for the beach only, and for evening outs, you can go for flat ballets or kitten heels while men can go for formal shoes.

Accessories – Ladies should always carry a scarf or pashmina in their bag as it serves various purposes. Also pack your sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brim hat.
